What is ERC-721?

NFTs are everywhereDigital works of art for millions, virtual properties, collector's items in games - the world of non-fungible tokens is booming. But hardly anyone knows what technical behind it. At the heart of many NFTs is the ERC-721 Standard - a defined set of rules on the Ethereum blockchain.

In this article, I'll explain it to you very simply, what ERC-721 means, why it is so important, how you can recognize it - and what role it will play in the future. Without any prior knowledge, but with lots of examples and real experiences.

What does ERC-721 mean?

ERC-721 stands for „Ethereum Request for Comments 721“. It is a technical standard that was published in January 2018 as a EIP-721 (Ethereum Improvement Proposal) was published. The developers behind it - William Entriken, Dieter Shirley, Jacob Evans and Nastassia Sachs - wanted to create a token standard that would unique digital objects can be mapped.

In contrast to ERC-20 Tokens, where each Token is identical, ERC-721 tokens are Non-fungible - so unique. Each token has its own ID, its own metadata and possibly its own image or file that is linked to it.

What does „non-fungible“ mean?

A fungible good is something that is interchangeable. A euro is a euro - it doesn't matter which 1-euro coin you own, they all have the same value. This is the case with ERC-20 tokens such as USDT or DAI is the case.

A Non-fungible good on the other hand unique. It has an individual value and cannot be exchanged 1:1 for another.

Everyday example:

  • Fungible: 1 liter of milk - is always the same.
  • Non-fungible: Your first self-painted picture - it only exists once.

NFTs are based on this principle. Each token stands for a unique digital object: a work of art, a song, a virtual object or a collector's item.

The first time I tried to explain the concept to a friend, I showed him two baseball cards. Both were „cards“, but one was from 1986 with an original signature, the other was a reprint. Both cards look the same, but their value is completely different - just like NFTs.

How does an ERC-721 token work?

An ERC-721 token is a Smart Contract on Ethereum, which offers the following functions:

  • ownerOf(tokenId)Who owns the token?
  • transferFrom(from, to, tokenId)Transfers ownership of a token.
  • approve(to, tokenId): Gives someone else the right to transfer the token.
  • safeTransferFrom(...)Transmits tokens securely with callback option.
  • tokenURI(tokenId): Provides metadata about the token (e.g. image, name, description).

These functions make it possible to clearly assign, trade, sell or transfer ownership of NFTs - just like a physical collector's item.

Although the technology behind it is complex, it is extremely simple from the user's point of view. In my case, setting up a Wallet with MetaMask and buying on OpenSea is almost like online shopping. I selected an NFT, clicked, paid - and it was in my wallet.

Where is ERC-721 used?

The standard is the technical basis for almost all known NFTs:

Digital art:

  • OpenSea, SuperRare, Foundation - everything is based on ERC-721.
  • Every NFT artist mints their works as ERC-721 tokens.

I myself discovered some works of art on OpenSea that were not only interesting aesthetically but also historically - e.g. political graphics that only exist once. A real digital witness of the times.

Collectibles & Gaming:

  • Games like Gods Unchained, CryptoKitties or Zed Run use ERC-721.
  • Each character, each item, each animal is a separate token.

My son collects digital soccer cards from a Blockchain-fantasy game. I was amazed at how seriously the platform works - almost like Panini, only digital.

Real World Assets:

  • Tokenize some projects Real estate, Event tickets or Music rights than NFTs based on ERC-721.

In the future, your concert ticket could simply be an NFT - which you store and present in your wallet.

Difference to ERC-20 and ERC-1155

FeatureERC-20ERC-721ERC-1155
Token typeFungibleNon-fungible (NFT)Multi-token (both possible)
ExampleUSDT, DAICryptoPunk #1234Game assets, tickets
UniquenessNoYesOptional
Field of applicationDeFi, TradeArt, gaming, collectorsGames, large NFT projects

ERC-721 is perfect when it comes to is about individual pieces, while ERC-1155 is more efficient for larger quantities (e.g. 100 concert tickets).

Advantages of ERC-721

  • UniquenessEach token is traceably individual.
  • SecurityProperty is transparent, publicly visible and cannot be forged.
  • InteroperabilityAn ERC-721 token works on all compatible platforms.
  • Possession instead of accessYou owns your NFT, no one can take it away from you (unless you lose your wallet).
  • Unlimited applicationWhether art, music, Real estate, ERC-721 can map many real-life scenarios.

Disadvantages & challenges

  • High transaction costsMinting or transferring to Ethereum can be expensive.
  • External dependenciesMany NFTs only link to image files that are not stored decentrally.
  • Counterfeits & plagiarismBlockchain protects the authenticity of the token - not the work itself.
  • Technical entry hurdleIf you have never worked with wallets, Gas Fees or NFTs needs some familiarization.

Own experience with ERC-721

My first NFT purchase was an animated avatar on OpenSea. I wanted to try out how the purchase process works. It was surprisingly simple - connect MetaMask, pay ETH, receive NFT. That token is still in my wallet today - not as a store of value, but as a memento.

Later, I also tried „lazy minting“ - creating an NFT for free, where the buyer later bears the transaction costs. It showed me how versatile the ERC-721 standard is: artists don't need any prior knowledge to tokenize their own works.

I also created an NFT that contained a PDF file with an e-book - as a test to see if you can connect digital content to a token. And yes: it worked. The token was effectively a proof of license.

Future of ERC-721

NFTs are more than just art: in the future, they could digital proof of ownership based on ERC-721 are part of everyday life - e.g. for:

  • Properties in the Metaverse
  • Concert tickets
  • Certificates & ID cards
  • Rights to music & videos
  • Digital equipment in games

Also Layer 2 solutions such as Polygon, Arbitrum or zkSync improve usability - faster and cheaper transactions, but still ERC-721 compatible.

Imagine your driver's license or university degree is in your wallet as a forgery-proof NFT. The employer can simply scan it and verify its validity - without any paper.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about ERC-721

What does non-fungible mean?

„Non-fungible“ means that the token is unique and not interchangeable. Every NFT is unique - like a work of art or collector's item.

What is the difference to ERC-20?

ERC-20 tokens are equivalent. An ERC-20 token is exactly like any other of the same type. With ERC-721, each token has its own ID and properties.

Where can I buy ERC-721 tokens?

On platforms like opensea.io, rarible.com or directly via special NFT projects.

How can I recognize a genuine ERC-721 token?

By using the Smart contract on etherscan.io check. If the standard ERC-721 is implemented and no obvious warnings appear, the token is usually legitimate.

Can you lose NFTs?

Only if you lose your wallet credentials or fall victim to a scam. The blockchain itself does not delete NFTs.

🧠 Conclusion

ERC-721 is more than just technology - it is the standard that makes digital uniques possible. Whether art, gaming or music - without this Ethereum standard, there would be no NFTs as we know them today.

It is worthwhile for beginners to understand the mechanism: You don't need huge sums of money or a lot of know-how. With just a few clicks, you can view, buy or even create your own NFT - and become part of a digital revolution.

If you're ready to try NFTs, start small: Look around on platforms, set up a wallet, get informed - and discover what digital uniqueness means.
